Former Prime Minister Paul Martin at Liberal Party Convention in Vancouver in 2008

Today was an exciting day – a friend of mine is the campaign manager for Jim Carr (Liberal candidate for Winnipeg South Center) and they are hosting former Prime Minister Paul Martin next week. There is a meet and greet event on Monday morning and as usual, there is a lot to do to get ready for an event like this. This is one of the things that I love about campaigns; event planning.

As some of you know, I recently finished a program in Public Relations & Strategic Communications at the University of Winnipeg, which covered the gamut of courses from writing for PR to media relations to event planning. One course that I really enjoyed was event planning, as I was an event planner for a several years and even planned and executed about 45 weddings last year. In all the campaigns I’ve been involved in, that’s one thing that has stayed constant: planning the special events. Whenever there is a prominent MP or special guest in town, I am generally involved (if only in a minor capacity.) There are aspects of planning an event with such prominent special guests that require attention to detail and careful planning, and with my experience and genuine like for this type of task, it makes a perfect combination. Today was no different.

Because of my school schedule and the fact that the writ dropped early, my time on the campaign trail has not been the most extensive. That will soon change. I look forward to getting back, knocking on doors and working hard to get our Manitoba candidates elected as Members of Parliament.
